What a Crown Does
A crown is a custom-made cap that fits completely over a tooth, restoring its shape, strength, and function. Crowns are typically recommended for teeth with large fillings that have failed, teeth that are cracked or fractured, teeth following a root canal, or teeth that are badly worn down. Rather than replacing the tooth, a crown reinforces what's left of it.
What to Expect
Getting a crown usually takes two visits. At the first, we prepare the tooth, take an impression, and place a temporary crown while your permanent one is made. At the second visit, we remove the temporary and cement the permanent crown in place, checking your bite to make sure it feels natural. Ask us whether a same-day crown option is a fit for your case.
Caring for a Crown
A crown is durable but not indestructible — treat it much like a natural tooth, avoiding ice chewing or using your teeth as tools. Regular brushing, flossing, and checkups keep both the crown and the tooth underneath it healthy. With good care, a well-fitted crown can last many years.
